Note:
  • Calm weather this evening with some migration.
Local birds and other specialities:
  • A juvenile Marsh Harrier was hunting; Three adult Purple Herons were foraging in the ditches; I heard one Waterrail screeming and far to the west I heard Greylag Geese and at least one Canada Goose.
  • In the afternoon, just one kilometer west of Meppel (Km-hok 21-16-22; 1 kilometer east of my countingpoint), I saw a huge group of soaring White Storks. I Counted at least 190 birds (107 on the picture below). These birds are the breeding birds of the surroundings of Meppel. This year seemed to be extremely good for the breeding birds. A lot of young birds and many new nests; not only on the artificial nests, but also on chimneys, roofs, silo's and even in trees. In august and september they gather in the Reest-area. When the wheather is good they start soaring, a magnificent view!

  • Most birds will leave the area somewhere in september.

107 White Storks; part of a group of >190 birds.
