Note:
  • This evening the first hours of birdmigration-countings in 2003. Although there was hardly any migration to count.
  • The view of the countingpoint has changed. At the other side of the canal; a row of poplars have been cut down recently. Besides that, the waterlevel of river and canal is very low at the moment. Some of the cows at the neerby field had been walking around the fence and had been grazing and shitting on the dike-road. The end of this fence is normally standing in the water of the canal. There is also a big bull between the cows so I have to watch out. To the south there used to be four huge electricity-poles. They are often used by Pregerines to sit on. Two of the poles have been removed recently.
  • There was a lot of hunting on the other side of the river. I don't know what they are shooting but probably no cows....... Greylag Geese were flying all the time. There are already around 800 Geese present.
Sunset 27 jul 2003; 21:25hLocal birds and other specialities:
  • Large groups of Starlings passed by, flying to their roost on a small island in the park in Zutphen. Other birds I saw flying to their roost were tens of Rooks, tens of Swallows, tens of Black-headed Gulls and some Blackbirds.
  • Several weeks ago, close by, I found a small colony of 20 pairs of Common Terns on a large roof of more than 2 acres. Adults were now feeding there screeming and flying young.
  • Between the 43 different spiecies I saw were: 5 White Storks, 4 Egyptian Geese, 3 Curlews, 8 Common Sandpipers, 1 Redshank, Goldfinch, Linnets, Blue-headed Wagtail, only one Coot, 2 Mute Swans, 2 Kestrels.
  • The grasshoppers I heard: one Great Green Bush-cricket (Tettigonia viridissima); 10 Dark Bush-crickets (Pholidoptera griseoaptera) and several Meadow Grasshoppers (Chorthippus parallelus).

  • Dutch: "Grote Groene Sabelsprinkhaan, Bramesprinkhaan and Krasser".
  • I didn't see any Swifts. Many are gone already but when I cycled back I saw plenty in the town Zutphen, (and also a hunting Hobby; the streetlights were already on).
